DWI Penalties: Ignition Interlock Devices

Westchester County DWI Defense Attorneys

An ignition interlock device (or IID) is an instrument installed in a vehicle that requires the driver to breathe into the device and provide a breath sample in order to start the car. If alcohol is detected, the car will not start.

Ignition Interlock Device: Cost of Installation

The New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services reports that installation of an interlock device costs between $75 and $100. In addition, there is a monthly fee that ranges from $70 to $100.

Why and How Long are Ignition Interlock Devices Installed?

Ignition Interlock Devices are installed after a person is convicted of a DWI. It does not matter whether the individual is convicted of misdemeanor or felony DWI, the court will order that an ignition interlock device be installed on each vehicle the motorist owns or operates. The device must remain installed for at least six months. The ignition interlock restriction will be added to the driver license record even if the license is revoked. The restriction will appear on the back of the driver license document as "interlock device."
